New Zealand's dollar coins were struck in aluminum bronze until 2006, when the Reserve Bank completed a currency restructuring that also reduced the size of the 10, 20, and 50 cent pieces. The dollar and two-dollar coins, however, retained their dimensions while switching to copper-nickel — a quieter change that most users never registered.
Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, adopted by New Zealand on this issue, had already been in use on British coinage since 1998.
