Part of the Perth Mint's long-running Australian Wildlife series, this issue belongs to a collector-driven program that deliberately rotated fauna subjects year to year to sustain secondary market demand — a commercial strategy the Perth Mint refined through the 1990s and 2000s into one of the more successful bullion-plus-premium models in modern minting. The loggerhead sea turtle, which nests in significant numbers along Queensland's coast, particularly around Mon Repos near Bundaberg, is one of the largest loggerhead populations in the South Pacific.
Mintage on these state-themed wildlife dollars was capped to maintain collector premiums above spot silver value.
