Purnululu National Park in Western Australia's Kimberley region was largely unknown outside the local Kija Aboriginal community until a 1983 documentary brought the Bungle Bungle Range to wider attention — extraordinary given the beehive-shaped sandstone towers had been forming for roughly 350 million years. The park received UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2003, just a decade before this issue, recognising an exceptional example of cone karst topography found almost nowhere else on Earth.
