The "One Johanna" denomination is a direct reference to the Portuguese gold Johanna — the johannes or Joe — a 6,400 réis coin that circulated widely in colonial Australia before British sterling was formally established. Early free settlers and merchants used Portuguese, Dutch, and Spanish gold interchangeably, and the Johanna was among the most trusted of those foreign pieces. This 2007 issue commemorates that pre-decimal, pre-Federation monetary pragmatism.
