Part of a four-coin series whose title draws from the Māori concept of the four winds, this issue represents the western wind, Te Hau-ā-uru, which in traditional Māori cosmology carried particular significance as a bringer of rain from the Tasman Sea. The Reserve Bank commissioned the series as a collector release rather than circulating currency — the pad-printing technique used on the silver flan allows colour application that conventional minting cannot achieve.
