Part of New Zealand's 2003 Lord of the Rings commemorative series, issued to coincide with the theatrical release of The Two Towers. New Line Cinema's licensing agreement with the New Zealand government proved unusually broad, allowing the Reserve Bank to produce an extended run of character-specific issues rather than the single omnibus pieces more common in film tie-in coinage. Treebeard's inclusion reflects the Ents' outsized role in the second film's marketing campaign.
