The "Masterpieces in Silver" series was produced by the Royal Australian Mint as a premium collector reissue of circulation designs, struck in fine silver to a standard never applied to the working coinage. The five-kangaroo dollar design by Stuart Devlin had been in circulation use since 1984, but the alloy and tolerances of everyday strikes left little room for the detail Devlin originally intended.
The 2004 issue coincided with the final years of Devlin's design on the circulating dollar before subsequent modifications to the series.
