Part of a four-coin series released in 2011 to mark sites listed on the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites World Heritage register, covering Riversleigh in Queensland and Naracoorte in South Australia. Riversleigh's deposits, laid down roughly 25 to 15 million years ago, have produced species entirely unknown before excavation began in earnest in the 1980s — including carnivorous kangaroos and giant wombat-like browsers that rewrote understanding of Gondwanan mammal evolution. The pad-printing technique applied to these coins was still relatively novel for circulating-format issues at the Royal Australian Mint.
