Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed effigy of the Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii) is depicted in profile, facing left, centrally positioned within the field and rendered in high cameo relief against a mirror-polished ground. Decorative Maori-style koru spiral motifs are distributed around the bird at the four cardinal quadrants, lending a distinctly New Zealand cultural character to the design. The denomination numeral '1' appears to the lower left of the bird, with the word 'dollar' inscribed in lowercase below. The legend 'ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER' arcs along the upper left periphery, while 'LITTLE SPOTTED KIWI' appears along the upper right.

Aanvullende informatie

The Little Spotted Kiwi — Apteryx owenii — was by 2004 functionally extinct on the New Zealand mainland, surviving only on Kapiti Island and a handful of managed offshore sanctuaries following eradication campaigns against introduced predators. The species had been gone from the main islands for decades by the time this coin was struck, which gives the issue a quietly elegiac character that the mintage figures alone don't convey.
