| 背面描述 | Central motif depicting a Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii) in a naturalistic bush setting, shown in profile walking to the left amid native New Zealand flora including flax and fern fronds, with a stylised mountain landscape in the background. The design is framed by an ornate border incorporating Maori-influenced koru scroll motifs at the four cardinal points. The legend 'ONE DOLLAR' arcs across the upper field, while 'LITTLE SPOTTED KIWI' and the Linnaean binomial 'APTERYX OWENII' appear in smaller lettering along the lower border within a banner-like cartouche. |

The little spotted kiwi — kiwi pukupuku — is functionally extinct on the New Zealand mainland, surviving only through managed island sanctuaries, principally Kapiti Island. The species was extirpated from the main islands by introduced predators before formal conservation programs existed to intervene. Its appearance on a circulation-denomination coin in bullion format reflects the longer New Zealand tradition of using native fauna to signal environmental commitment, though the little spotted kiwi's island-only status gives this particular choice a sharper edge than most.
