Obverse description The fourth portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II faces right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The legend ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2014 1 DOLLAR encircles the portrait, with the designer's initials IRB appearing below the bust truncation. The design was executed by Ian Rank-Broadley and is rendered in a refined, naturalistic style characteristic of late-twentieth and early-twenty-first-century Commonwealth coinage.

Additional information

Part of the Perth Mint's long-running "Lest We Forget" dollar series, this 2014 issue honours the Royal Australian Navy's submarine service — a force that traced its operational origins to the boats acquired from Britain in 1914, one of which, HMAS AE1, disappeared off the Duke of York Islands in September of that year in Australia's first naval loss of the war. The wreck was not located until 2017.
