Reverse description A highly detailed high-relief depiction of a koala clinging to the textured bark of a eucalyptus tree trunk occupies the central field, surrounded by naturalistically rendered eucalyptus branches and foliage. The animal's thick fur and distinctive facial features are rendered with exceptional sculptural detail against a deeply mirrored proof field. The curved legend AUSTRALIAN KOALA arcs across the upper field, while the inscription 2013 1oz 999 SILVER appears along the lower rim. The Perth Mint's P mintmark is positioned to the lower right of the central design.

Additional information

The Perth Mint's high-relief strikes require dies pressed at significantly lower speeds with fewer blanks per hour, making production runs deliberately small. This 2013 koala issue was struck in that format partly as a response to collector demand generated by the Royal Canadian Mint's high-relief programs, which had demonstrated strong secondary market performance for the technique after 2007.

Fourth portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, introduced on Australian coinage in 1999.
