Mitre Peak — the iconic summit rising from Milford Sound — anchors a long-running New Zealand collector dollar series pairing native wildlife with landmark landscapes. The kiwi's inclusion here is almost reflexive at this point in New Zealand silver issues, but the pairing with Fiordland carries specific weight: the region's near-impenetrable terrain meant it remained one of the last strongholds for kiwi populations as mainland numbers collapsed through the twentieth century under pressure from introduced predators.
