Reg Mombassa — born Chris O'Doherty — is better known as a founding member of the band Mental As Anything and for his long association with the Mambo surfwear label, whose deliberately crude, irreverent graphics defined a particular strain of Australian visual culture through the 1980s and 90s. His invitation to redesign the standard circulation dollar for this commemorative issue was an unconventional choice by the RAM, deliberately reaching outside the numismatic tradition. The result sits in an awkward and interesting gap between fine art coin design and countercultural illustration.
