Fred Hollows spent the 1970s and 80s documenting the catastrophic rates of trachoma and other preventable blindness among Indigenous Australians — conditions largely absent from the white population — and his public confrontations with government health agencies over the disparity were not always diplomatically handled. He founded the Fred Hollows Foundation in 1992, the same year he was named Australian of the Year, just months before his death from renal cancer in 1993. The intraocular lens factories he established in Nepal and Eritrea could produce lenses for roughly $5 each, compared to $150 in Western markets.
