Heard Island and McDonald Islands constitute one of the most remote and inhospitable territories on Earth — an Australian external territory in the sub-Antarctic that has never had a permanent human population. The penguin motif is appropriate: the islands are home to significant colonies of macaroni and king penguins, and access is so restricted that scientific permits are required even for researchers. Perth Mint's pad-printing process, applied here to deposit color directly onto the struck surface, was a relatively new production technique for the mint in this period.
