Heard Island and the McDonald Islands are among the most remote territories on Earth — an Australian external territory in the southern Indian Ocean with no permanent human population and no postal address. The 2010 dollar series used pad printing, a technique borrowed from industrial product marking, to apply color directly to the coin's surface rather than using enamel inlays or cloisonné. It was one of the earlier mainstream applications of the method by the Perth Mint for circulating-format coins.

Heard Island hosts the only two active volcanoes on Australian sovereign territory.
