| Obverse description | The fourth-portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, occupies the centre of the obverse, depicted in right-facing profile with a jewelled crown and drop earring. The engraver's initials 'IRB' appear below the truncation of the bust. The obverse field is rendered in a deep black proof finish with gold-coloured rim treatment. The circumferential legend reads 'NEW ZEALAND' to the left and 'ELIZABETH II' to the right, with the fineness inscription '.999 Ag 1oz' arching above the effigy and the date '2021' and the series name 'MIDDLE-EARTH' positioned below. |

Released as part of New Zealand's officially licensed Lord of the Rings coinage program, this piece draws on a long-standing arrangement between the New Zealand Mint and the Tolkien estate's licensing network — a relationship that has produced dozens of issues since the Peter Jackson films brought sustained commercial attention to the property. The Doors of Durin appear on this coin because New Zealand holds a peculiar cultural proximity to Middle-earth through those productions, lending the licensing geography a logic it might otherwise lack.
Ian Holm died in June 2021, the same year of issue.
