Part of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's extended Lord of the Rings commemorative program, this release coincided with the twentieth anniversary of Peter Jackson's film adaptation — shot almost entirely on location across New Zealand, which had leveraged the production into a sustained national tourism identity. The Boromir piece is one of several character-specific issues in the series, each struck to the same specification.
KM#446.1 distinguishes this from a privy-marked variant issued in smaller numbers for the collector market.
