Issued to mark the centenary of Australian Federation, this dollar belongs to a six-coin series released by the Perth Mint in 2001, each coin dedicated to one of the founding states. The Western Australia tribute acknowledges the colony's reluctant path to federation — WA was the last to vote yes, doing so in July 1900 only after a separate referendum driven largely by the goldfield populations of Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, who threatened to form their own state if the colonial government refused to put the question to voters.
The pad printing technique used for the coloured elements was still relatively novel in Australian commemorative coinage at this date.
