New Zealand issued this coin on the 75th anniversary of the war's end in the Pacific, marked officially on 15 August 1945 when Japan accepted Allied surrender terms following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. New Zealand had committed roughly 140,000 personnel across the conflict — a staggering proportion of a population that barely exceeded 1.6 million at the time. The country lost over 11,600 dead across all theatres.
The .999 fine specification places this squarely in the modern bullion-collector category rather than anything approaching circulating commemorative intent. Struck at the Royal Australian Mint under contract arrangement.
