Additional information

Edgeworth David led the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Magnetic Pole in January 1909, as part of Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. He was 50 years old at the time — an age at which most men of his era had long since abandoned fieldwork. The Perth Mint's pad-printing technique, used here to apply color directly onto the coin's surface, was still relatively novel in Australian commemorative production at the time of this issue.
