The "Discover Australia" series launched by the Perth Mint in 2007 used pad printing — a process borrowed from industrial manufacturing — to apply color directly onto the coin's surface, a technique still uncommon in sovereign coinage at the time. Sydney's inclusion in the series is straightforward enough, but the pad-printed color layer on these pieces is notoriously susceptible to lifting at the edges if stored improperly, a known issue that has quietly damaged more than a few examples in poorly ventilated slabs.
