Port Arthur, the former convict settlement on Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula, operated as a penal station from 1833 until its closure in 1877, housing some of the British Empire's most intractable prisoners under the separate system of discipline. The Discover Australia series, launched by the Perth Mint in 2007, was among the earlier Australian issues to employ pad printing — a technique borrowed from industrial manufacturing that deposits ink onto the coin's surface to achieve color effects impractical by conventional minting.
