The Discover Australia series, launched by the Perth Mint in 2006, used pad printing — an industrial transfer process borrowed from the commercial plastics industry — to apply color directly onto the coin surface. At the time it was a relatively novel application in numismatics, and the Perth Mint was among the first sovereign-backed facilities to employ it at scale on legal tender issues. The technique allowed landmark subjects to be rendered in ways conventional die work cannot achieve.
Canberra was purpose-built as a political compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, whose rivalry over hosting the federal capital was written directly into the Australian Constitution's clause requiring a neutral site.
