The Diamond Wedding Anniversary commemorates the 60th anniversary of the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who wed on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey. It was one of the first royal weddings to be broadcast on radio to a global audience, though the BBC's request to televise the ceremony was denied by the Palace. The pad-printing technique used on this coin — a process borrowed from industrial manufacturing — allows photographic-quality imagery to be applied to the coin's surface, a relatively novel application for commemorative coinage at the time of issue.
