Issued as part of New Zealand's official Lord of the Rings coin program tied to the release of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, this piece was licensed through New Line Cinema and produced while the films were still in active theatrical release — The Two Towers had opened in December 2002, and The Return of the King was still a year away. New Zealand's involvement was not merely commercial; the government actively promoted the country as Middle-earth during this period as a tourism strategy, and the coin program was a direct extension of that policy.
