Issued as part of New Zealand's King Kong commemorative series tied to Peter Jackson's 2005 remake, filmed entirely in Wellington. The "Cameraman" design belongs to a set of five one-dollar coins released that year, each depicting a different scene or character from the production. New Zealand Post coordinated the release alongside the film's December premiere.
Jackson's leverage after the Lord of the Rings trilogy was substantial enough that New Zealand's government actively supported the production as a national economic and promotional event — the coin series was part of that broader effort.
