The Bush Babies series was issued by the Perth Mint beginning in 2013, targeting the collectible dollar market with native Australian fauna. The common brushtail possum — Trichosurus vulpecula — was so successfully introduced to New Zealand as a fur trade animal in the 1800s that it became one of the country's most destructive invasive species, now numbering in the tens of millions across the Tasman while remaining protected in its native range.
