Prince George Alexander Louis was born on 22 July 2013, third in line to the throne at the time of issue. New Zealand, as a Commonwealth realm with Elizabeth II as head of state, was among the nations that moved quickly to produce commemorative coinage marking the birth — part of a wave of numismatic releases that followed within weeks of the announcement from the Lindo Wing.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II used here was sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley, adopted by most Commonwealth mints from 1998 onward.
