The Perth Mint's Bird of Paradise dollar belongs to a long-running Australian nature series that has made the mint's bullion and collector output among the most consistently imitated in the Pacific region. These issues are struck to .9999 fineness rather than the .999 standard common to most silver bullion — a distinction the Perth Mint adopted partly as a marketing differentiator and partly because refining capacity at the facility genuinely supports it. The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was already being phased toward retirement by 2018 as preparations for a fifth portrait were underway.
