Additional information

The Kokoda Track campaign of 1942 was among the most grueling engagements Australian forces fought in the Pacific — a 96-kilometre mountain trail through the Owen Stanley Range where heat, mud, disease, and Japanese resistance combined to produce casualty rates that alarmed Allied commanders. The campaign is now central to Australian national memory in a way few Second World War actions are, partly because it was fought defensively, on home soil's doorstep, by militia troops initially dismissed as inadequate.

The pad-printed color application on this issue was applied post-strike at the Perth Mint, a finishing technique the mint adopted extensively in the late 2000s for commemorative releases targeting the collector market.
