The Australian Kookaburra bullion series, running since 1990, changes its reverse design annually — a deliberate policy by the Perth Mint to drive collector demand alongside the purely bullion market. The 2009 issue sits in a period when the Mint was aggressively expanding its silver program in response to surging investor appetite following the 2008 financial crisis, and mintage figures from this year reflect that spike in demand.
The fourth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was introduced on Australian coinage in 1999.
