The Australian Kookaburra silver bullion series has run continuously since 1990, with Perth Mint changing the reverse design annually — a deliberate policy to drive collector demand alongside its bullion function. The 2007 gilded variant applies 24-karat gold selectively to the kookaburra device, a post-strike finishing process Perth Mint has used across several of its bullion programs to produce collector editions without altering the underlying coin specification.
KM#889a distinguishes the gilded version from the standard 889 strike. Both share the same dies.
