The Australian Kookaburra series, running annually since 1990, changes its reverse design each year — a deliberate strategy by the Perth Mint to drive collector demand through annual variety. The pad-printing process used on this issue applies a thin polymer-based ink layer directly to the coin's surface to introduce color, a technique the Perth Mint adopted for select bullion issues in the mid-2000s. Adhesion quality on early pad-printed examples varies, and color lifting at the edges is a known issue on improperly stored pieces.
