The roots of the tree extend downward through a row of pointed convict tents in the lower field, and a heavy chain runs horizontally across the base, its links intertwining with the roots to symbolise the convict origins of European settlement. Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing commemorative dollar program, this piece marks the convict transportation system that deposited roughly 162,000 men and women on Australian shores between 1788 and 1868. The final convict ship, the Hougoumont, arrived in Western Australia in January 1868 — making 2018 the 150th anniversary of transportation's end, which explains the timing of this release.
Western Australia accepted convicts long after the eastern colonies had refused them, largely because the fledgling Swan River Colony was desperately short of labour.
