Reverse description The central device depicts a stylised tree whose spreading canopy is shaped in the outline of the Australian continent, rendered with a textured, naturalistic surface. The roots of the tree extend downward through a row of pointed convict tents in the lower field, and a heavy chain runs horizontally across the base, its links intertwining with the roots to symbolise the convict origins of European settlement. The Canberra mintmark C and designer's initials TD appear in the mid-field. The curved legend AUSTRALIA'S CONVICT ERA arcs along the upper left rim, with the dates 1788 - 1868 along the right.
