Part of New Zealand's "Lord of the Rings" licensing program tied to Peter Jackson's film trilogy, this piece was issued during the global theatrical run of *The Return of the King*. The Reserve Bank contracted the New Zealand Mint for the series, one of the more commercially aggressive coin programs undertaken by a Pacific sovereign issuer at the time. Production was aimed squarely at the collector and film merchandise market rather than circulation.
KM#265 is one of several distinct reverse types in the series, each allocated its own catalog number despite sharing identical specifications throughout.
