The Alphabet Collection was a Royal Australian Mint circulation release aimed squarely at children, with each letter paired with an Australian animal, object, or icon — "U" for ukulele, or umbrella, depending on the release variant. Pad printing, applied directly to the coin's surface rather than struck into the die, was the technical novelty here; the RAM had been refining the process for years before committing it to a circulating series. The ink adhesion on circulated examples tends to show wear faster than the underlying metal.
