The Alphabet Collection was issued by the Royal Australian Mint across 2015–2017 as a circulating commemorative series aimed squarely at engaging children with coin collecting. Each of the 26 letters paired with a distinctly Australian subject — the letter S most likely assigned to an animal or cultural icon beginning with that letter. The pad-printing process used for the colored design was a relatively novel application for a circulating Australian coin at the time, applied directly over the struck surface.
