Issued to mark the New Zealand All Blacks' hosting of the 2011 Rugby World Cup — which the team won, defeating France 8–7 in a tense final at Eden Park — this coin belongs to a broader commemorative program released by the Reserve Bank ahead of the tournament. The pad-printing technique used to apply color detail directly onto the silver planchet was still a relatively recent innovation in New Zealand commemorative coinage at the time, producing a more durable surface decoration than traditional enamel inlay.
