New Zealand's dollar coinage was redesigned in 1988 specifically to introduce native fauna — replacing the existing portrait reverse designs that had been in use since decimalization in 1967. The yellow-eyed penguin, hoiho in Māori, was already a species of serious conservation concern by the time this coin entered circulation, with mainland South Island populations under sustained pressure from habitat loss and introduced predators.
The series proved short-lived. Mounting production costs relative to face value accelerated the withdrawal of the one-dollar coin, which was demonetized when New Zealand eliminated its dollar and two-dollar coins in favor of coins in 1991.
