The 1990 date marks the sesquicentennial of the Treaty of Waitangi, signed on 6 February 1840 between the British Crown and over 500 Māori rangatira. The anniversary was deeply contested — significant protests accompanied the official commemorations, with many iwi arguing the Crown had never honoured the treaty's terms. Issuing a proof coin in the middle of that political tension was, for some, an uncomfortable act of celebration.
