The original "holey dollar" was created in 1813 when Governor Lachlan Macquarie, facing a chronic coin shortage in the New South Wales colony, ordered 40,000 Spanish colonial eight-reales punched through the center. The center plug — the "dump" — circulated as ninepence, while the pierced ring circulated as five shillings. By manufacturing two coins from one, the administration both doubled its coinage and rendered the pieces too distinctive to be easily shipped out of the colony by merchants.
This 1990 RAM issue commemorates that improvisation. The mintage was tightly controlled, keeping it firmly in collector territory from the outset.
