| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a pearl drop earring, and a pearl necklace, as modelled by Raphael Maklouf for the third definitive portrait. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim, AUSTRALIA along the right rim, and the date 1997 appears at the lower right. The engraver's initials RDM are incused on the truncation of the bust. The deeply mirrored proof field provides sharp contrast to the frosted relief of the portrait. |

Issued to mark the 70th anniversary of Kingsford Smith's 1927 Southern Cross trans-Pacific flight — still one of the longest overwater routes attempted at the time — this proof was struck as a companion to the standard cupro-nickel dollar but in a limited silver edition. The "Small Head" designation distinguishes the obverse portrait variant used on Australian coins from roughly 1985 onward, an effigy that was itself replaced by a fourth portrait in 1999.
