Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, a pearl drop earring, and a pearl necklace, as modelled by Raphael Maklouf for the third definitive portrait. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim, AUSTRALIA along the right rim, and the date 1997 appears at the lower right. The engraver's initials RDM are incused on the truncation of the bust. The deeply mirrored proof field provides sharp contrast to the frosted relief of the portrait.

Reverse description The reverse features a detailed rendering of the Fokker F.VII/3m trimotor aircraft Southern Cross, its name lettered on the fuselage, shown in flight above a world map with a dotted flight path tracing the historic 1928 trans-Pacific route from the United States to Australia. A portrait bust of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith wearing aviator's goggles appears behind and above the aircraft. The legend SIR CHARLES KINGSFORD SMITH arcs along the upper rim, with the birth and death dates 1897–1935 at the right. The denomination 1 DOLLAR is inscribed in two lines at the lower centre of the field.
