Issued to mark the centenary of Charles Kingsford Smith's birth, this piece commemorates one of the most consequential figures in early Australian aviation. Kingsford Smith completed the first transpacific flight in 1928 — San Francisco to Brisbane across nearly 12,000 kilometres in the Southern Cross, a Fokker trimotor — and followed it with the first non-stop crossing of the Australian mainland and the first trans-Tasman flight the same year. He disappeared over the Andaman Sea in November 1935 during an attempt to break the England-Australia speed record.
