Landcare Australia, the conservation program this dollar commemorates, had been running for only four years when the coin was issued — founded in 1989 as a joint initiative between the National Farmers' Federation and the Australian Conservation Foundation, an unlikely alliance that reflected growing anxiety over land degradation across the continent. By 1993, Landcare had enrolled tens of thousands of community groups, making it one of the largest grassroots environmental programs in the world at the time.
The Royal Australian Mint issued this as part of its ongoing commemorative dollar program, which had by then established a pattern of recognizing Australian civic and environmental causes annually.
