Howard Florey — born in Adelaide in 1898 — shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing penicillin into a clinically usable drug, a feat that arguably saved more lives than any other single medical achievement of the 20th century. The Royal Australian Mint issued this dollar in 1998 to mark the centenary of his birth. Florey spent most of his career in Oxford, which created an odd cultural friction: Britain long received the credit his countrymen felt belonged to Australia.
