New Zealand's 1989 commemorative program coincided with the lead-up to the 1990 Commonwealth Games held in Auckland — the first time New Zealand hosted the event. This silver proof is one of several sports-themed issues released in the years preceding those games, part of a deliberate multi-year collector series funded partly through presale subscriptions to overseas numismatic dealers.
The Raphael Maklouf effigy, his third portrait of Elizabeth II adopted by New Zealand in 1986, appears here before the Royal Mint's revised specifications prompted yet another update in the following decade.
